Work, Iced Tea and the Spirit of Resolve

35334949_954c16af4d_mIt's the end of the work day and you still have a ton of things to do.  You're tired.  You want to go home.  Cold iced tea is waiting for you on the counter of your kitchen and your spouse is wondering where you are.  If you're like me, you review a series of mantras to reconcile the uncompleted work with the strong desire to go home.

Here are some of my favorites:  I'll bring some work home.  Those calls weren't that important.  I must be a good listener because so many people wanted to speak with me today! And my favorite, I'll just come in super early tomorrow and crank out a ton of work.

The defeating aspect of each of these is that they don't address why the work didn't get done in the first place.  The spillover effect is also deep and often negative.  Work taken home cuts into family time.  Arriving early cuts into sleep time.  And on and on.

Maybe we would do better to identify which parts of the day are more geared to peak productivity.  Pray for a spirit of resolve in order to avoid the end-of-day mantras and enjoy that cold glass of iced tea.
